It seems to me that we do live in two worlds. There is this physical one, which is coherent, and there is a spiritual one, which to the average man, with his flashes of religious experience, if you like to call them that   —that world is very often incoherent. This experience of having two worlds to live in all the time, or… not all the time, occasionally, is a vital one and is what living is like.

Our body is not merely so many pounds of flesh and bone figuring as a machine, with an abstract mind or soul added to it. It is throughout a live organism pulsating with its rhythm of rest and activity, beating time (as we might say) in ever so many ways, most readily intelligible and in the full bloom of its nature when it feels itself as one of those great self-guiding energy-transformers which constitute the real world of living beings. Our conception of man is that of an organism that maintains and balances itself in the world of reality and actuality by being in active life and active use, i.e., using and living and acting its time in harmony with its own nature and the nature about it. It is the use that we make of ourselves that gives the ultimate stamp to our every organ.

It is not enough that our hearts should beat in a useful rhythm, always kept up to a standard at which it can meet rest as well as wholesome strain without upset.  ...es razonable y moral suicidarse?

¡No! Suicidarse es irracional, así como tallar los retoños de una planta que se quiere extirpar. Ésta no morirá, crecerá irregularmente, eso es todo. 

La vida es indestructible, está más allá del tiempo y del espacio. La muerte no puede más que cambiar la forma, poniendo fin a la manifestación en este mundo. Pero renunciando a la vida en este mundo, yo no sé la forma que ésta tomará de nuevo, si me será más grata y en segundo lugar yo me privo de la posibilidad de aprender y adquirir el provecho de mi yo, todo aquello que hubiese podido aprender en este mundo. 

Por otra parte y sobre todo, el suicidio es irracional porque, renunciando a causa del disgusto que ella me provoca (la vida), yo muestro tener un concepto errado de la finalidad de mi vida, suponiendo que sirve para mi placer, mientras ella tiene por finalidad, de un lado, mi perfeccionamiento personal y por el otro la cooperación a la obra general que se cumple en el mundo.

Y es por esto que el suicidio es inmoral. Al hombre que se suicida, la vida le fue dada con la posibilidad de vivir hasta su muerte natural, a condición de ser útil a la obra general de la vida y él, después de haber disfrutado de la vida, hasta que le parezca agradable, ha renunciado a ponerla al servicio de la utilidad general, apenas le sea desagradable; mientras verosímilmente él empezaba a hacerla útil en el preciso instante en el cual su vida se endurecía, porque cada obra comienza con sufrimiento.
